The southbound carriageway remains closed following a crash involving a van and a cyclist.
The southbound carriageway remains closed following a crash involving a van and a cyclist.

A cyclist was seriously injured and taken to hospital yesterday following a collision with a van on a busy north-east road.

A section of the A96 Aberdeen to Inverurie road was closed for more than five hours as emergency services dealt with the accident, which happened at around 6.20am.

Police are keen to talk to a taxi driver who was passing nearby as they seek witnesses to the crash, which involved a silver Vauxhall van.

The male cyclist, who is in his 50s, was riding close to the Broomhill roundabout at Kintore when he was knocked from his bike..

The police described the man’s injuries as being “serious”.

The van driver was uninjured.

Last night sergeant Neil Morrison, road policing said: “I am appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or seen either the van or the cyclist prior to the collision to contact us as soon as possible.

“I am particularly keen to hear from a taxi driver who was travelling south near the scene at the time and who may be able to assist us with our enquiries.

“It should be noted that the pedal cycle in question was red in colour.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting incident number 0419 of 18/9.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We attended a road traffic incident on the A96 this morning. One male patient was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.”

The road was now re-opened to traffic in both directions shortly before 1pm.
