Man, 39, charged after alleged assault at Highland League social club

Huntly made the announcement this morning.
Huntly made the announcement this morning.

A 39-year-old man has been charged following an alleged assault at a Highland League side’s social club.

The incident took place at Huntly Football Club Social Club on East Park Street in the early hours of Sunday, September 3.

Another man, believed to be in his thirties, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The club travelled away to Forres Mechanics the previous afternoon, coming out on top in an action-packed encounter which finished 2-3.

It is not known whether either man was in attendance at the game.

PC Tom Hope, who investigated the incident, said: “I would like to thank those individuals who assisted with our inquiries.

“This investigation was greatly aided by the excellent CCTV at Huntly Football Club and the cooperation of the staff.”

He added: “Violence of any kind within our community will not be tolerated and will be vigorously investigated.

“Officers carry out regular checks on licensed premises in order to provide a visible presence and deter such incidents from happening in the first place.

“We will continue to carry out directed patrols and any incidents will be dealt with robustly including potentially banning individuals from entering licensed premises.”

Huntly chairman George Clark said such incidents are “few and far between” at the club.

He added: “We were very concerned to learn about this incident.

“I would encourage any member of the public who may be able to assist the police with their inquiries to come forward and do so.”

PC Hope added: “Our inquiries are continuing into this incident and anyone with further information is requested to contact Huntly police office or call 101.”

A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal detailing the circumstances and the man charged is expected to appear in court at a later date.
