A missing man’s car has been discovered at a popular north-east beauty spot.

Concern is growing for Inverbervie man Duncan Adam, 55, who has not been seen since leaving his home on Sunday.

His disappearance sparked a major search in the Mearns area, which involved a police helicopter, specialist support officers on the ground and door to door inquiries.

After several hours of extensive searches the force confirmed they had had a breakthrough after discovering Mr Adam’s car parked at Saint Cyrus nature reserve.

Earlier police had appealed to the public to find anyone who had spotted his white Vauxhall Corsa in the area.

Last night officers were combing the beach and the surrounding area for clues to his whereabouts.

Inspector Megan Heathershaw, who is leading the search, said: “I would ask anyone who was in the St Cyrus area at the weekend and saw a parked white Vauxhall Corsa to let us know so that we can pinpoint exactly when Duncan left his car there. Likewise if you were there at the weekend and didn’t see one, that information could be crucial too.

“Extensive searches with assistance from specialist search officers and the Police Scotland helicopter have been ongoing today, and they will continue tomorrow if he is not found tonight.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have contacted police this afternoon with information in response to our appeal for information. Your assistance is much appreciated.”

Insp Heathershaw also urged anyone who sees someone matching Mr Adam’s description to come forward.

He is described as being around 5ft 7ins in height, of a heavy build with very short brown hair which is greying.

“Once again, I would appeal to Duncan to let us know that he is safe and well if he sees this appeal. I also ask anyone who has seen a man matching his description or has heard from him to call 101,” she added.
