Police are hunting for vandals who stole buggies from a north-east golf club and rode them along the course causing extensive damage.

A member of the public found one of the vehicles abandoned on Western Road in Insch just before 9pm on Tuesday.

After officers were called to the scene they found another in a similar condition in the nearby golf club.

Police later realised they had both been driven across the course causing significant damage along the way.

Tracks had been left on the field making it impossible for the members to play on it.

Last night Colin Campbell, the vice-captain of the club, expressed his disappointment over the incident.

He said: “I’ve been with the club for 20 years, there have been a few small vandalisms before but nothing like this.

“We don’t know how much it’s going to cost, the two buggies have both been damaged.

“In terms of repairing the golf course it’s just going to be labour intensive.

“We had a new keeper in last September and he just had it how he wanted it and he’s pretty sickened by this.”

The buggies were taken after 3.30pm on Tuesday and recovered around five hours later.

Police Constable Mark Hammond urged anyone with information to get in touch.

He said: “The buggies had been parked at Insch Golf Club at 3.30pm that day but a member of the public called in about the buggy at Western Road in the evening.

“Anyone who either saw any of the buggies being moved later afternoon yesterday or in the evening or who knows anything about this incident is asked to contact police.”
