Campaigners “too embarrassed” to hold more fundraising events after delays in studies

Campaigners trying to restore a north-east attraction have revealed they are “too embarrassed” to hold more fundraising events.

The former outdoor swimming pool at Tarlair near Macduff has not been used since it closed in the 1990s.

The Friends of Tarlair group want to bring the A-listed site back into use and have been looking after the area surrounding the art deco building.

Around £300,000 of repairs were carried out in 2014 including the restoration of concrete terraces, repairs to the children’s paddling pool and a new disability ramp.

The activists have previously held gala days, disco nights and dances to boost their cause.

But they insisted they cannot continue staging these events until they hear the results of a council feasibility study.

A report was commissioned to assess the potential of running a tearoom at the pavilion, but Pat Wain, chairwoman of the Friends of Tarlair, said they had been left in the dark about its findings.

She said: “A feasibility study for the tearoom was meant to be presented last summer, but was delayed to allow the new area manager to get up to speed.

“When we last enquired about a new date for the study to be presented, we were told there wasn’t one, and that there had to be a private meeting at Woodhill House to gain permission to go ahead.”

Mrs Wain insisted the lack of clarity about the iconic structure’s future was causing problems for campaigners.

She said: “The truth is we are embarrassed at being told things are going to happen and feasibility studies are going to be presented, then we have to go quiet because the promise was not fulfilled.

“We also feel embarrassed about holding more events for funds because the first thing attendees ask is “What is the next stage?”, and when we can’t tell, we worry we will lose support.

“People don’t feel good getting their hopes up, then constantly having them shattered.”

An Aberdeenshire Council spokesman said: “Given the significant ongoing cost of maintaining this 13-acre site, the council has been exploring a number of options for Tarlair.

“These range from basic ongoing management of the site to the creation of new facilities.

“No formal proposals have been agreed as yet.

“We appreciate there is interest in the outcome of this work and will be progressing it further during the spring.”
