An Aberdeenshire couple have shared their secrets to a long and happy marriage after toasting 60 years together.

Winnie and Bert Wilson, who are both 78, first met at a dance 63 years ago.

Three years later the pair were married, and have remained just as strong a couple to this day.

For the majority of their marriage, the Wilsons lived on a farm in Sauchen.

Mrs Wilson said: “My husband was born in the house and was there all his life.

“We have both been farmers all our lives. I’m a farmer’s daughter and my husband was a farmer.”

The farm was first set up by Mr Wilson’s grandfather in 1925, and has been passed through the generations since.

Three years ago the couple moved to Alford so that they could enjoy retirement and each other’s company, which has also given them time to reflect on their successful six-decade partnership.

“You have to learn to give and take,” Mrs Wilson said.

“And don’t go to bed angry. We never argue – we have differences of opinion but we never stop speaking.”

Mr Wilson quipped: “The secret to a long marriage? Don’t get divorced.”

His wife added: “You have to have a sense of humour. We both have that, and that’s what keeps us going.”

To mark their diamond anniversary, the couple were presented with flowers and a bottle of whisky from ward councillor Robbie Withey on behalf of Aberdeenshire Council.

“We didn’t expect it at all,” Mr Wilson said.

“It was all our family’s doing and they surprised us.

“It was really lovely to get all that.”
