A Stonehaven pensioner who has spent the last 30 years donating her time to the community has been honoured with a British Empire Medal.
Joy Adams, 85, has been volunteering at the Edenholme Care Home and makes daily visits to chat with residents.
Last night she said she was “quite overcome” by the news and had no immediate plans to celebrate.
“I’m not that kind of person,” said Mrs Adams. “I just feel I am helping somebody by going to chat to them – it doesn’t cost any money to have a chat.
“But I’d like it if they held the award ceremony at Edenholme – it would be a nice thing for all the residents to take part in.”
Mrs Adams was awarded her BEM in the Queen’s birthday honours list for services to Older People in Stonehaven.
Her nomination stated that she “enhanced” the lives of the care home residents by providing a “listening ear” and offering “social and emotional support”.
Mrs Adams is a life-long resident of Stonehaven and is the chairwoman of the Friends of Edenholme.
