A family has paid tribute to a “much loved son, brother and grandson” who died suddenly at the weekend.
Mearns Academy pupil Corey Doyle fell ill at a house in the Fordoun area in the early hours of Sunday.
The youngster, from Fettercairn, was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for emergency treatment, but later died.
It is understood the death had been drug-related.
Yesterday his family said they were “absolutely devastated” and paid tribute to a “kind, loving son”.
In a statement they said: “Corey was a much loved son, brother and grandson and was a popular pupil at Mearns Academy in Laurencekirk.
“He was a kind and loving son who also enjoyed spending time with his many friends.
“Corey loved spending time with his family, joking and making us laugh.
“We are all absolutely devastated by what has happened.
“We are grateful to those who have supported us at this incredibly difficult time and ask that we are now given privacy to grieve.”
Aberdeenshire Council has already begun putting in place arrangements to support pupils and staff who require it with term time beginning today.
Gareth Campbell, Mearns Academy Head Teacher, said: “Corey was a polite, respectful and popular member of our school community.
“He had just finished S4 and we were looking forward to him returning to S5.
“The entire school community of pupils, parents, and staff are deeply shocked and saddened by the news of his tragic death and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.”
A council spokesman added: “Clearly this is a tragic incident which has saddened us all and our thoughts are with the young man’s family and friends at this point.
“We are putting arrangements in place to support the school community, who will be shocked and saddened by this news at the start of the new term.
“Support and advice will be made available to any pupils or staff who need it.”
Police have confirmed inquiries are going. A report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
