A delivery driver banned from the roads after hitting 111mph claimed he’d been advised by his garage to accelerate to sort problems with his “turbo”.
Police were on patrol on the A90 Aberdeen to Dundee Road at 9.50pm on May 31 this year when Ronan Strachan tore past in his Volkswagen GT TDI.
Officers activated their blue lights and soon pulled the 21-year-old mechanical engineering student over by the side of the road.
The 21-year-old was charged with dangerous driving and subsequently pled guilty at Aberdeen Sheriff Court, where he returned to be sentenced yesterday.
During his appearance, defence agent Jennifer Pritchard offered an explanation as to why her client had been 41mph above the speed limit.
She said: “He tells me that the vehicle in question has a turbo engine and he had been having difficulty with part of that.
“The garage told him that in order to clear the link mode he should accelerate.”
She added: “He is a full time student who has just started his fifth year studying mechanical engineering.
“He is a delivery driver but he accepts the only outcome should be the loss of his licence and the loss of his employment.”
Sheriff Ronald McDonald banned Strachan, of Slateford Green in Edinburgh, from the roads for a year and ordered him to carry out 70 hours of unpaid work.
