A woman has died following a one-car crash.

A woman has died after her car left the road and smashed into a wall at the entrance to Donald Trump’s north-east golf course.

The crash happened just after 3pm on Saturday at the entrance to Trump International Golf Links, at Menie Estate, off the old A90 Aberdeen to Peterhead road.

The black Volkswagen Golf was travelling southbound from the Balmedie direction when the accident happened.

Police, ambulance crews and the fire service were all called to the scene but the 38-year-old female driver could not be saved.

It is understood formal identification of the woman will take place later today.

Ellon and District Councillor Richard Thomson said he was saddened to learn of the incident.

He said: “It is very sad to hear that the driver has died following this accident. My thoughts are very much with everyone affected.

“I’d encourage anyone who might have been in the area at the time, or who might have seen the vehicle involved, to contact the police so that they might be able to establish how this tragic accident could have happened.”

Fire crews from Ellon and Central, Aberdeen arrived at the scene at about 3.20pm and used cutting gear to free the woman from the car.

The last appliance left the scene at about 6.40pm.

The golf course remained open throughout, however the road itself was closed for several hours to allow collision investigators to assess the scene.

Last night a spokeswoman for the golf course said their thoughts and prayers were with those involved.

‘’We are deeply shocked and saddened by yesterday afternoon’s terrible accident near the entrance to our property,” she added.

Police are now urging anyone who witnessed the crash to come open.

Sergeant Stuart Lawrence from the road policing unit said: “I can confirm that a 38-year-old female has died as a result of the collision.  My thoughts are with her family and friends at this tragic time.

“We are keen to trace any drivers who may have been travelling on the road around the time and seen the vehicle prior to the collision.  I would ask anyone who has any other information, including dash cam footage, which would assist our investigation to contact Police Scotland on 101.”
