Boost for popular north-east playbarn after positive inspection report

A popular north-east playbarn has been praised for its “continuous improvement”, two years after suffering a drop in its grading.

Hoodles at Oldmeldrum was downgraded in all four categories after a review by the Care Inspectorate in 2017.

The centre was left with an ‘adequate’ rating in quality of staffing and quality of management and leadership, and ‘good’ in quality of care and support and quality of environment.

This came after the playbarn was deemed to be ‘very good’ in each of the four categories after a review in 2014.

Education Scotland yesterday released their report after the authority’s most recent inspection.

It stated: “Since our previous visit to the setting, children’s experiences continue to improve across the setting.

“All children now have increased access to outdoors. The layout of playrooms has improved and children have access to a wider range of quality resources.”

It also praised the relationship between practitioners and children, and added: “Children can now move freely between the playroom and outdoors for the majority of the day.

“The increase in natural materials and real-life objects both indoors and outdoors is giving children opportunities to make choices and decisions about their play.

“We observed the majority of children engaging well in their play and sustaining interest for longer periods.”
