Hardy Aberdeenshire group take on hot coals to raise cash for Charlie House

A group of hardy fundraisers hot-footed it across a trail of burning embers this weekend.

The event, held at the Newmachar Hotel, was carried out by three members of the Charlie House Ascends Machu Picchu (Champ).

The Champ team of 36 people are preparing to take climb Machu Picchu in September and each member has pledged to raise £4,300 towards a target of £150,000.

The money raised will go towards Charlie House’s mission to build a specialist centre in Aberdeen for children with complex disabilities and life-limiting conditions.

Taking part from the Champ team and leading the 20-strong Newmachar team were Lynne Anderson, Gillian McLeod and Sarah Bremner, who is also the communications manager for Charlie House.

Last night Mrs Bremner said the firewalk had been “surreal”, adding: “We received training beforehand which helped us get in the zone – so to speak.

“It was quite scary standing at the start of the two-metre path of burning embers because you could feel the heat radiating from it.

“We were told to walk quickly and lightly – I think the pre-training just helped you find that strength inside to just go for it.

“No-one hesitated at all – there was absolutely no doubt – I feel so proud of everyone who took part.

“The whole village seemed to be there too, cheering us on, which was fantastic.”

The three friends have now reached their targets and have raised £15,000 towards the challenge.

Their next fundraising event will be a family Sportathon on May 11 at Newmachar’s Axis centre.
