Runners will be on their marks for new 10K in north-east town

The new Run Banchory event has been organised by Scott Birse, who owns SB Fitness, and is also a keen runner.

Runners will be on their marks for what is believed to be a north-east town’s first ever multi-terrain 10k next month.

Run Banchory has been organised by Scott Birse, who owns his own personal trainer business, SB Fitness.

The event starts and finishes at the King George V Park playing field, and will take participants on a scenic route through Blackhall and Scolty woods.

The real challenge for runners will be underfoot, where terrain will be a 50% mix between tarmac and forestry road – with just a few feet at the start and end on grass.

The total ascent across the route will be about 528ft and participants are advised to wear trail footwear or standard running shoes.

And there will also be a 1k junior race within the grounds of the park for children of primary school age.

Mr Birse, who is a keen runner himself and is also serving as the race director, said: “I have always questioned why a town the size of Banchory does not have such an event compared to other local towns which do.

“Therefore, I was determined to organise an event that can bring a community together whilst also benefiting local organisations and charities.

“It is the hope that the event will grow into a festival of running and bring a lot to the community.”

The event, which is limited to 400 runners, takes place on Sunday, June 16.

“As a committee, we’ve done everything through the council and we were advised by local police on the route,” he added.

“I’ve had various meetings with organisations and feel that we are gradually gaining interest from the community and local businesses.

“I’ve absolutely loved being the race director but it very much is a learning process. It has been a little stressful at times, but I’m looking forward to the event in June. I just hope it’s a sunny day.”
