An appeal has been launched after an injured Rhea was discovered running loose in a north-east village.
The white bird – which is related to the ostrich – was found in the Rothienorman area on Sunday.
It was initially believed to be an emu, but the Scottish SPCA has since confirmed the bird is actually a rhea.
The animal is now being looked after by staff at the charity’s rehoming centre in Aberdeen and efforts are being made to trace its owner.
Assistant manager Louise Griese said: “We are currently caring for a stray Rhea which was found on June 23 in the Rothienorman area.
“The bird has some injuries but otherwise seems in good health.
“If you recognise the Rhea, please call the centre on 03000 999 999.”
