Appeal for volunteers to help cats find forever homes

A north-east animal charity is appealing for volunteers.

The Peterhead and Fraserburgh Cat Protection group is seeking new volunteers to help them care for and rehome felines in their care.

The charity covers a vast area of Buchan, and needs more people to help make a difference.

Treasurer Janice Maclean joined up after beating cancer five years ago.

Wanting to keep busy after retiring, she has tirelessly worked to care for and rehome hundreds of cats ever since.

She said: “We’ve had a number of mums and daughters joining up recently which has been great – they come together and have great fun.

“They bond with the cats and with each other.

“We have volunteers come in at any time in the day to clean the pens and feed the cats.

“They also help with visitors – we find it really important to get our cats socialised with their future owners before they get fostered.

“Last year we rehomed 97 cats, the year before that was 116.

“It takes a lot of work but more volunteers will hopefully allow us to rehome even more.”

The charity has a mini rehoming centre where the cats and kittens are cared for.

Volunteers also try to help with neutering in the local wild and feral population and help provide support for the elderly and those unable to look after their animals for many different reasons.

But the “main priority “is helping to reunite lost cats with their owners and to take care of stray cats and kittens on the local community.

Volunteering roles also include fundraising, managing the website and documents or taking calls.
