A trio of hikers from Inverbervie have raised £1,500 for two north-east charities by completing one of Scotland’s longest walks in just three days.

Elaine and Craig Mitchell, and Brian Morrison, marched through torrential rain to complete the 96-mile long West Highland Way in less than 72 hours.

The route, which runs from Milngavie north of Glasgow all the way to Fort William, takes in some of Scotland’s most beautiful scenery and provides a challenge to even seasoned walkers.

Setting off at 1am, the group walked continuously for more than 23 hours on the first day, finishing at just after midnight the following evening.

They raised the cash for Childline Aberdeen, which assists youngsters in desperate need and Community Food Initiatives North East (CFine), a charity which works to tackle food poverty and more.

Ms Mitchell said: “We survived – people said we were mad to walk it in three days, and they were right.

“We totally underestimated the challenge we set ourselves, especially as we ended up walking for 23 hours on the first day after Brian sustained an injury.

“But we did it, and lived to tell the tale.

“We had fun, managed to complete it and raised a fantastic amount for our two chosen charities.”
