Long-awaited work on an Aberdeenshire school will begin in January, it has been revealed.
As part of an ongoing programme of investment into Aberdeenshire’s school estate, work on the extension of Hillside School in Portlethen will resolve capacity issues.
The council currently estimates the upgrade will be worth £850,000.
Hillside School in Portlethen was built just two years ago to accommodate 350 pupils, at a cost of £12.4 million.
But the need for more space came sooner than anticipated.
Projections presented to councillors showed the school could have as many as 612 pupils by 2022.
Now, Bancon Construction has been appointed to add four brand new classrooms onto the school.
They are expected to be ready by August 2020.
The single-storey extension has been tabled to support a rising roll at the school, which will “continue to operate as normal” during the construction phase.
Craig Clement, head of resources and performance for Aberdeenshire Council’s education and children’s services team, said: “These works follow our nationally-recognised primary school building brief which puts accessibility as well as outdoor learning and supporting the curriculum at the core of everything we do.”
