A charity that supports hundreds of people across Aberdeenshire have desperately launched a “DIY SOS” appeal to ensure their future.
Homestart Garioch celebrate their 25th anniversary in April, but need the community’s help to ensure they reach that milestone.
The charity was previously based at Inverurie Town Hall, but have been moved due to upgrade works.
Now they have found a home at 1A George Square, behind the Craigdon Mountain Sports shop in Inverurie, but are appealing for help to get up and running.
Work is hoped to start by the end of next week, with the charity due to move in by March.
Significant work is needed on the building to bring it up to scratch and create private spaces for the charity’s beneficiaries – who include people struggling with mental health and New Scot refugee groups looking for a safe space to meet with their children.
Homestart Garioch manager Mhairi Phillip said: “We’re looking for donations of material.
“Unfortunately we just don’t have the funds to complete the work ourselves.
“In 2018 we had a deficit of around £77,000 with funding being cut from Aberdeenshire Council and our five-year Big Lottery Funding also ending.
“We weren’t anticipating the cost of moving building at all.
“We have managed to make up our shortfall and are replying on donations and grants to ensure our future.”
Homestart Garioch have secured the lease for 10 years, with a chance of having it in for longer.
As part of their DIY SOS appeal, they are searching for donations of materials such as radiators, paint, flooring, and a toilet and sink are also all desired, or alternatively donations of money.
Ms Phillip, who has an extensive history working in the third sector, added: “Homestart Garioch makes such a huge difference to the lives of many families, children and volunteers.
“We can reach some people the council can’t as a charity, and try empower those who we work with.
“Now, we hope the community can help us and we would be so grateful to anyone who supports us.”
