Aberdeenshire Council has announced it is spending half a million pounds to transform Banchory library into a culture and visitor centre, with work on the project starting this summer.

Local authority staff will unveil the plans at an engagement event between 2.30pm-6.30pm on Tuesday, February 11 at the library and museum.

The work is designed to “vastly improve” access between the building’s two floors through the installation of a lift, while a redesign will allow a wider range of cultural services at the site.

The overhaul will allow space to permanently display a wide selection of local artefacts and enhance the quality of the library service on offer.

The majority of the £500,000 cost is being met through the Scottish Government’s town centre fund.

The council’s culture sub-committee chairman David Cook, said: “We are really looking forward to showcasing our plans and hope that lots of people will come along and tell us what they think of the them, so we can move forward with the best design possible.”

His vice-chairwoman, Anne Simpson, added: “This is a great opportunity for the community to see how we plan to build on the good work done by the library and museum to make the centre more accessible with a broader range of services.

“We are confident this investment will encourage existing users to visit more often and see others visit for the first time, as well as promoting Banchory and its history.”
