Angling group casts wide net in hunt for new members

An Aberdeenshire angling group has issued a rallying call for new members.

The Alford Angling Association was formed to take over fishing beats at Waterside and Haughton, which were previously managed by Aberdeenshire Council.

Launched by James Robinson, the group is made up of a mix of experienced and novice anglers and those who were inspired to pick up their rods again after many years away.

The association has issued an appeal for more members to join up – and is particularly keen to get the younger generation involved.

James Robinson said: “We had more than 50 members last year – there has been a really good response since we started.

“We want to ensure affordable and local access to the beats and we would like to get more people involved. It is quite a sociable club.”

People travel from Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire to join the club, whose members caught more than 50 salmon last year.

Mr Robinson said: “The largest we caught was about 20 pounds.

“We would love to get more young people involved and also attract some ‘lapsed fisherman’ as I like to call them – people who haven’t fished in a very long time.

“Our experienced members will help pass on advice and support.”

Anyone interested in joining the club and getting a season ticket should e-mail alfordanglingassociation@gmail.com for an application form.

Day tickets, meanwhile, can be bought at the Everlongart  Studio and Gift Shop and the Post Office on Main Street.
