An Aberdeenshire rotary club has been raising money to purchase life-saving equipment for people stranded in disaster zones around the world.

The Ythan Valley Rotary Team generated more than £600 through sponsorship and donations to buy a special Shelterbox tent by taking part in a sleep-out in one on Saturday night.

It was pitched at Neil Ross Square in Ellon.

The emergency shelters, which typically cost around £590, come with a range of vital items for those in need, such as thermal fleece blankets, water containers and filtration systems, cooking equipment and mosquito nets.

All money raised by the rotary will be going to the Shelterbox organisation to help it provide such shelters for people in war-torn or disaster-struck regions around the globe.

Gary Macalister of Ythan Valley Rotary said: “We’ve raised enough with the support of businesses in the area and people putting their hands in their pockets to cover the costs of one tent kit.

“If you’re in an area where you’ve lost everything and there’s no infrastructure there to provide essential life support, a Shelterbox tent really is essential and can in certain circumstances really make the difference between life and death.

“It was a really windy cold night on Saturday, so taking part in the sleep-out was a good way of showing just how valuable these tents are for people who really need it.”
