Possible reprieve for north-east coastal community without post office

A coastal community could see the return of its local post office, after its abrupt closure earlier this year.

At the start of April the post office in the Keystores shop on Stonehaven’s Allardice Street shut, leaving residents of the seaside community with access to only one local post office, the smaller Arduthie branch inside the Co-op shop and petrol station on Kirkton Road.

As a result, Stonehaven residents are currently faced with a lengthy journey up a steep hill to access the sub post office, or a journey to to Portlethen or Inverbervie to access their post offices, which offer a wider range of services.

Stonehaven councillors Sarah Dickinson and Dennis Robertson wrote to the Post Office Ltd making the case for bringing back full post office services in Stonehaven.

Dennis Robertson

Mr Robertson described the expectation for older people to travel the nine or 10 mile distance to other towns for full post office services as “quite unreasonable.”

Now, their efforts appear to have been successful.

The Post Office are seeking applicants on their website to set up a post office in the town.

The successful applicant would either purchase the current Allardice Street or incorporate a post office local into their existing or proposed business.

The Post Office’s website says the ideal candidate would have “super customer service and focus” as well as “strong conversational skills.”
