A van-load of books and learning materials made their way to children across Aberdeenshire today.

More than 10,000 vulnerable children across Scotland currently have no books at home. In a bid to reduce this number, the Scottish Book Trust has donated 57 boxes of books to Aberdeenshire Council.

Early this morning Vincent Docherty, head of education, personally loaded the boxes into a van, before dropping them off at 17 childcare hubs across the region.

They will now be safely distributed to children and families who need them the most.

Mr Docherty said: “We’re incredibly grateful to the Scottish Book Trust for the provision of these materials which will be a welcome boost for many happy wee faces.

“I also hope to offer a nod of encouragement to staff in our hubs who I feel deserve a great deal of praise for their dedication and enthusiasm.”

Marc Lambert, CEO Scottish Book Trust, added: “At least 13,000 vulnerable children and families across Scotland have no books at home, or access to books.

“With schools, nurseries and libraries closed, this situation is bleak for many and unlikely to change soon.

“We are extremely grateful to Aberdeenshire Council for helping us reach these families through their learning and childcare hubs.
