Aberdeenshire bridge at ‘end of its life’ to be replaced

A north-east bridge “at the end of its life” will be replaced with a new and improved crossing.

Signs have appeared at both ends of the Meiklemill Bridge to inform residents work will commence on July 6.

The wooden bridge was severely damaged by Storm Frank in 2016 and there have been efforts made to bring it back into proper use ever since.

Ellon councillor Gillian Owen fought for money to repair the transport link, and last year the Formartine area committee agreed to £40,000 worth of funding.

Mrs Owen said: “I had feared that this project would have been a casualty of Covid-19.

“I was delighted to see this notice and have now confirmed with council officers that this much needed upgrade will go ahead.”

In a note to Mrs Owen, the officer wrote: “The contract for design, fabricate, and erection was let back in January 2020 and much work has already been undertaken by the external company in preparation for building the new bridge that it made financial sense to proceed as planned, especially now the construction sector in Scotland has been given permission to restart on the proviso that all necessary Covid secure precautions are adhered to.

“In advance of erection of the new bridge our own construction section will be dismantling and removing the old bridge, which is now at the end of its service life.”

The footbridge will be closed for six weeks from July 6.
