Temporary buildings to be erected outside over capacity north-east school

An extension will be created outside a north-east school that was nearly bursting at the seams before the pandemic.

A letter has been issued to parents and carers of Hillside School pupils in Portlethen advising them of accommodation arrangements for August.

The school was built two years ago to accommodate 350 pupils, at a cost of £12.4 million.

But projections previously presented to councillors showed Hillside School could have as many as 612 pupils by 2022.

A four classroom extension had been planned to address potential capacity issues, but this was delayed due to coronavirus.

Now, an alternative solution is required from the time youngsters go back next month until the four classrooms are completed by Bancon Homes.

A two-classroom temporary building with toilets and a secure entrance will now be located in the disabled parking bays to the front of the school.

The disabled bays will be temporarily relocated to another convenient area.

An Aberdeenshire Council spokesman said: “With the roll at Hillside School projected to rise in August and the scheduled extension works delayed owing to the coronavirus lockdown, we will be creating temporary accommodation within the school car park.

“This accommodation will comprise two classroom spaces, toilets, cloakroom and storage rooms with safe walking routes.”
