Organiser makes ‘difficult decision’ to cancel Aberdeenshire market

Ballater's famers' market will not return until 2020.
Ballater's famers' market will not return until 2020.

Organisers of the Ballater Farmers’ Market have made the “difficult decision” to postpone the event until next year.

The regular events were cancelled in the spring due to the pandemic.

Established in 2015, the market typically takes place every fourth Saturday between April and November.

A statement on the market’s Facebook page reads: “I came to the decision I would not want to do anything that is in any way putting the public’s health and safety in danger.

“I feel it is the best decision for the safety of the Ballater community and for everyone involved in the markets to postpone.

“The market will start up again in April 2021, hopefully as close to normality as we can make it, and with safety strongly in mind.

“As far as I know, other markets are starting up again, and I urge you to support your local stalls at markets, online or with home deliveries.”

Businesses including The Highlanders Bakehouse in Deeside have described the announcement as “sad news”.

Huntly Farmers Market in full swing.

A number of other markets are, however, running once more to showcase local produce.

Huntly Farmer’s Market was one of the first to return to business last month – and just last week Chapleton welcomed the return of its farmers’ market.
