Art display will be absent from Stonehaven’s town hall for first time since 1975

Artists from across the north-east are taking part in a unique online display.

In 1975, Stonehaven Art Club formed and held its first display at the Town Hall.

From the outset, there was a strong sense of community spirit in the club – which included sisters Peggy Kemp and Sheila Mearns alongside Anne Munn, Margaret Tait, Jane Early, Ann Beaumont, Margaret Smith, and Florence MacNair.

The club held monthly meetings and availed themselves of a Scottish Arts Council scheme, where they were entitled to invite seven lecturers per year to visit, at a cost of £7 each.

Their annual displays at Stonehaven’s Town Hall were crucial to their success – offering the chance for artists to sell their work.

Now, for the first time, the display has gone virtual due to the pandemic.

Artist Judith Kyle said the club was “excited” for the chance to showcase their work.

She has three of her own paintings for sale – including an acrylic of a Bengal tiger, a street scene of Crail in Fife and a Peploe-inspired still life of tulips in a vase.

She said: “It’s the first time since 1975 Stonehaven Art Club has not been able to stage their annual exhibition in the town hall, however not to be defeated we have gone online.”

“All the artists were very excited at having something to work towards. The display is such a big event for us.”

There are a large variety of paintings for sale – many of which are inspired by north-east landscape
