Aberdeenshire World War I commemoration dinner

Aberdeenshire World War I commemoration dinner

Aberdeenshire residents can take a step back in time this weekend during a World War I commemoration dinner and concert.

Methlick Heritage Society has teamed up with the local branch of Legion Scotland to host the event on Saturday.

Guests will be served a typical wartime dinner of bully beef, potatoes and cabbage, followed by stewed apples and custard.

Afterwards, Lord Aberdeen will give a talk about the work of his grandfather, Lieutenant Colonel Lord Dudley Gordon – who later became Marquis of Aberdeen – during the war. He commanded territorial battalions of the Gordon Highlanders and was awarded the DSO for his bravery.

Legion Scotland will then lead a brief act of remembrance, focusing on the names of the fallen from Methlick and the surrounding areas. There will also be a display of WWI memorabilia.

Traditional singer Robert Lovie will also perform, along with acclaimed Tarves fiddlers the Davidson Brothers, singer Moira Stewart and Highland dancer Danielle Christie.

Audience participation will also be expected, with the concert party leading some classic wartime songs such as Keep the Home Fires Burning and Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit Bag.

The dinner will be held in Beaton Hall, Methlick. For tickets, priced £12.50, call 01651 806254 or pop into the village shop.
