Two sisters who discovered they were pregnant just 48 hours apart have given birth on the same day.

Jennifer McRitchie and Amy Muir were amazed when they discovered they were both expecting at the same time earlier this year – even joking their babies could have the same birthday.

Little did they know that was exactly what would happen, and that they would find themselves on the same ward at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital.

Miss McRitchie, of Huntly, gave birth to baby girl Heidi on Thursday. just seven hours before her sister welcomed little Ritchie into the world.

Miss McRitchie, 23, whose boyfriend Greg Carroll was by her side at the hospital, said: “We were joking about having our babies at the same time. I still can’t believe it, and am overwhelmed.

“I went to my bed on Wednesday, disappointed that I wasn’t feeling the baby coming.

“But I suddenly felt something after speaking to Amy only an hour before I went into labour.”

Little Heidi weighed a healthy 7lb 3 1/2oz when she was born at 5.02am.

Her cousin Ritchie was born at 12.01pm, weighing 7lb 5 1/4oz.

Mrs Muir, who is married to Andy, already has two children, five-year-old Connor and three-year-old Maddie.

The 30-year-old, of Stonehaven, said: “This is so unusual and I still can’t believe what has happened.

“Jennifer Facetimed me at 11.30pm on Wednesday to say something was starting and she was then taken into hospital by Greg.

“She always wanted to have her baby first so I’m delighted at what has happened. I will always remember this as being one of the most special days in my family’s history.”

The new mums’ other sister, Lyn Fraser, said she was delighted her new niece and nephew had been born on the same day, and asked nurses if they could be moved to the same ward so the family could enjoy the special moment together.

She added: “I never expected anything like this to happen, and I’m so pleased for both of them.”
