A festive woodland made up of individually decorated Christmas trees will be set up inside a 100-year old Aberdeenshire chapel this weekend.

St Mary’s Chapel at Blairs will hold its second ever Christmas Tree Festival in the building on Saturday, December 6 to raise funds for the renovation of its interior.

In the run-up to the event, 26 trees will be individually decorated inside the chapel by various sponsors – a mix of local groups, organisations and businesses.

The tree festival will include music and activities for all the family, with a performance from Aberdeen’s Rock Choir in the Roman Catholic chapel.

Speaking yesterday, Rachel Gambro, fundraising co-ordinator for St Mary’s, said: “Last year was the first time that we ran it, it was extremely successful, we had a full chapel of 250 and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it, so we wanted to run it again.

“The trees are currently sitting in the church just now. By Saturday all the trees should be decorated in an individual way, last year it was like a museum looking around at them all.”

Aberdeen’s St Joseph’s School, the neighbouring Beannachar Care Home, seafer’s charity the Apostleship of the Sea and the Aberdeen Diocesan Choir are among the groups decorating this year’s Christmas trees.

The developers behind the neighbouring housing developments at Blairs, Muir Homes, have also sponsored two trees as have WM Donald, the utilities firm behind road works on the site.

Road works will not be affecting entrance to the chapel on South Deeside Road this weekend.

The event will be held from 3pm until 6pm on Saturday.
