A woman who died when she was hit by a car in an Aberdeenshire village has been named by police.

Helen Filson was taken to hospital on Tuesday following the accident on Eavern Place in Oldmeldrum.

The 81-year-old spoke to the Press and Journal last year when she forced to make a seven-hour round trip on six buses to visit her husband in a care home at Crimond.

The devoted wife told how she had to travel three-and-a-half hours from her home in Oldmeldrum to see her dementia-struck husband – who was struggling with basic functions such as talking and eating – after he was forced to live there by the local authority.

She spearheaded a Press and Journal campaign to fight for the rights of older people in the north and north-east of Scotland – and said no one would listen to her plight.

Her husband was finally moved to a care home in Ellon, just a short bus ride away from where she lived.

Mrs Filson’s family today said she would be “dearly missed”.

Her daughter Sharon Munro said: “Mum was a feisty and energetic person who enjoyed living an independent and social life in Oldmeldrum.

“She loved her family and has three children as well as grandchildren and a great-grandson who will all miss her dearly.

“Prior to our dad’s death they loved to go hill walking and take caravan holidays and we have very fond memories of them both.”
