An Aberdeen student will unveil a life-size canvas of Commonwealth Games hopeful Hannah Miley next week.

John Prince was commissioned by north-east swimmer to produce a number of press images for the games, which will be held in Glasgow this summer.

The Robert Gordon University Gray’s School of Art student will graduate with a BA in Commercial Photography in July and is displaying his work as part of an exhibition which opens on Tuesday.

The 38-year-old said: “I wanted the canvas to be life-size because it is a very strong image that is both visually inspiring and engaging.

“I really enjoyed working with Hannah.

“She was a true professional and we worked well as a team to achieve the imagery we wanted to portray in a very tight time schedule for her training.”

The striking image shows the swimmer, who is from Inverurie, against a black background with a saltire painted on her face – an idea which she and Mr Prince came up with together.

Mr Prince worked as a sports assistant at RGU: Sport before enrolling on the full-time photography course at Gray’s and wants to pursue a career in sports advertising after graduating.

The image featured in the exhibition will also be used on a billboard in the city’s Holburn Street next month as the countdown to the games progresses.

Mr Prince said: “It makes me feel really proud to think that my photo will be displayed like that in the city and on such a large scale.

“It has been a long, hard year but my photography has gone from strength to strength.”

Course leader Mick Eason said: “The range of subjects that our students have covered in their projects this year is extremely impressive and will make for a fantastically diverse exhibition.

“I’m delighted that for the first time since we launched this course in 2009 we are now able to offer students the chance to continue on to do an honours year, providing a wider educational experience.”

The public exhibition will take place in the main foyer at Gray’s School of Art, Garthdee Road, Aberdeen, from Tuesday to Saturday.
