An Aberdeenshire town’s tourist land train will embark on its first journey of the year this weekend.

The Stonehaven land train takes visitors around the coastal town’s best-loved attractions, starting in Market Square and travelling to Dunnottar Castle before returning.

About 100 people a day hopped aboard following its launch in August last year.

The first run of the 2015 season will be today at 1.30pm, after which it will depart at 2.30pm and 3.30pm.

It will also operate from Sunday to Tuesday at 10am, 11am, noon, 1.30pm, 2.30pm and 3.30pm.

The Stonehaven Town Partnership (STP), which runs the service, is still seeking qualified drivers and conductors to join the crew.

Isabel Munn, the STP’s project development coordinator, said: “We have some conductors and storytellers, but we have lost a few as they have got full-time jobs now.

“They need to be comfortable dealing with people from all over the world.

“We will be running weekends after the holidays in April and May and will look at running it over weekends and a few other days per week in June, then every day where possible over the school summer holidays.”

The group is also seeking permission to run the train on the Bervie Braes.

The 4.5 tonne attraction is not allowed on the route at present due to Aberdeenshire Council weight restrictions aimed at preventing landslides.

The STP is also hoping to raise funds to buy a new carriage for the vehicle this year in order to cope with anticipated demand.

Tickets for the land train are £3.50 for adults, £3 for concessions and £2 for children aged two to 12, while family tickets are £10.
