A group of Aberdeenshire mums are reaching out to Syrian refugee families with a fundraiser this weekend.

Donations are being accepted at the Banchory West Church in the town’s High Street on Saturday by local mothers sympathising with struggling refugee families.

The event, named PreLoved, will raise money for vital supplies for the displaced Syrians – many of whom have been forced to flee their homeland.

Clothing donations are also being accepted.

Banchory mum Kirsi Gibson said the their aim would be the provision of food, hygiene, infant kits and psychological support for the youngsters affected by their experiences.

She added: “We are a group of young mums who felt compelled to respond to the crisis the Syrian and Iraqi people are living through.

“We can’t imagine how these frightened, fleeing parents manage to feed and clothe their children.

“This is an opportunity for everyone to play a part in helping the refugees.”

There will a selection of nearly-new baby, children’s and women’s clothing, as well as baby accessories and toys. Baking and teas will also be available.

The Middle Eastern country has been ripped apart by civil war and the rise of the so-called Islamic state.

Millions have fled their home cities and are living in refugee camps in the country, whilst thousands have taken their lived in their hands and fled for Europe.

The UK has agreed to welcome 20,000 refugees into the country as the crisis in Europe worsens, with Scotland set to be take about 2,000.

The fundraiser will run from 10am until 12.30pm at the church, and clothing donations will be accepted at the building from 4pm until 7.30pm on Friday, November 6.

Entry is £1 for adults and a further £2.50 for refreshments. Children will get in for free. All proceeds will go to Christian Aid for dispersal amongst the refugees.
