More than 1,000 people welcomed the festive season to the heart of an Aberdeenshire town at the weekend.

Stonehaven Market Square hosted the town’s Christmas Parade, with crowds braving the freezing weather to line the streets.

And the day of festivities was rounded off with the switching on of the Mearns town’s Christmas lights.

Organisers of the Stonehaven Christmas Extravaganza said the event had brought the whole community together, with droves of people gathering around the giant Christmas tree in the town square.

The parade was led by the Stonehaven Pipe Band followed closely by the Lyndsey School of Dance.

The group proudly wore their medals picked up in Disneyland Paris during the International Gathering of Scottish Highland Dancers – which they attended only days after the attacks in the French capital.

Locals scouts and beavers also took part in the celebration, aswell as the Ury Players drama group, Santa Claus himself and – coming up the rear – the Stonehaven Land Train.

Meanwhile Christmas tunes were supplied by carol singers from both Fetteresso and Dunnottar Churches, while two look-alikes dressed as Anna and Elsa from hit film Frozen delighted youngsters.

The event was organised by the Stonehaven Business Association (SBA).

Parade organiser and chairwoman of the SBA, Chris Stirk, said the parade was “fantastic”.

“The Stonehaven Pipe Band were at the head and the Highland dancers were behind them, they were all great,” she said.

“Everybody seemed to enjoy the day. Overall there must have been hundreds of people involved in the parade and well over 1,000 people in the square.”

Liz Thomson, owner of Stonehaven’s My Beautiful Caravan, also helped organise the celebrations.

She said: “It was very good, a lot of people turned up. The whole event was to try and bring more shoppers into the town to shop local.

“We think it was a success. It definitely felt more festive once the lights went on. It seems to be getting better every year.”
