PICTURES & VIDEO: Misery in Ballater as rescue operation mounted

Reports of extreme flooding in Ballater have seen a huge operation mounted by emergency services to rescue townsfolk from flood waters.

The River Dee burst its banks and the town has become completely flooded.

Roads in and out of the Royal Deeside resort town are closed and impassable.

Coatsguard Helicopters, dozens of fire-fighters, police, ambulance crews and mountain rescue are all  engaged in the rescue effort.

It is not yet known how many people have needed rescued or if there have been any injuries.
