Explained: What might have caused massive flash of light in skies over Scotland

The mysterious blaze in the sky which has captivated the north of Scotland tonight is likely to have been an exploding meteor, according to a member of Aberdeen Astronomical Society.

Torcuill Torrance said it this was the case it must have been a “fair size.”

He said: “The highest probability is that there has been an exploding meteor which has entered the atmosphere, heated up a lot and exploded.

“This took place at 6.45pm and 46 seconds.

“It must have been a fair size to have been heard.”

The internet was awash with reports of a “big white flash” at about 7pm.

Witnesses across the Highlands and Aberdeenshire said they had seen the ‘explosion’ – but said that it was not accompanied by any thunder so couldn’t have been lightning.
