The Garioch Lions raft race is returning this summer

Brave fundraisers are being urged to come forward and take on the waters of the River Don for an annual charity race.

The Garioch Lions raft race is returning this summer, with organisers keen to see what designs participants will dream up this year.

In the past, rafters have taken to the Don on the likes of Godzilla, Peter Pan’s crocodile and homemade forklift trucks.

The raft race raises money for local kidney and cancer research causes.

It will run from Kemnay Academy’s playing fields to the Old Don Bridge in Inverurie on Sunday, June 5.

The Garioch Lions began running the raft race 26 years ago, before which it was held by local man Donald Ingram.

The person who raises the most cash for the causes will be treated to a meal for two at Inverurie’s Strathburn Hotel, whilst there will also be a prize for the best raft.

Vice-president and secretary of the Garioch Lions, Jim Souter, said: “People come up with everything from fire engines and Godzilla, it is unbelievable the work that goes into them.

“When we took it over (from Mr Ingram) we didn’t want to change where the money was going. The good things is the money stays in Aberdeen.

“We never know until the day of the event how many people is going to turn up. It is a big event, there is hundreds of people who come out to see it.”

The event will run from 1pm until 4pm.

A mini-gala with a bouncy castle, stalls and other attractions will be set up at the finishing line.

There must be a minimum of two people per crew and all participants must wear life jackets and be 12 and older.
