Her original target was £1000, but a woman from Alford has gained the support of her community after winning her battle with cancer and has raised over £10,000 to help others.
35-year-old Jacqueline Jamieson hosted a 5K walk, which attracted more than 100 participants who amassed over £10,000 for Target Ovarian Cancer.
Mrs Jamieson was diagnosed with ovarian cancer last year after having a cyst removed which then came back as cancerous.
Yet, following an operation and chemotherapy, Mrs Jamieson was given the all-clear in September, and after her experience, was keen to raise the profile of ovarian cancer.
Mrs Jamieson said: “I had an ovarian cyst and it got removed in February last year, but it came back as pre-cancerous, so I went into hospital in April to get my ovary removed, and it came back as cancer.
“But in many ways, I was so lucky, it was a tiny section right in the middle which is really unusual because normally with ovarian cancer, it’s very advanced before it’s detected.
“So I underwent chemotherapy until the end of September, but now I am all clear and it’s a fantastic feeling.”
It was after getting the good news that Mrs Jamieson decided she wanted to do something to help educate people on the symptoms of ovarian cancer as well as try and raise some money.
She said: “We wanted to raise awareness for ovarian cancer as it’s not that widely known about.
“So we went through some ideas and my friend Rachel said why didn’t we walk in pants instead of bras like they do for breast cancer, so then we came up with neon pants and it really went from there.
“I can’t believe the turnout. We could have had more, but we only had insurance to allow 100 people to take part.
“Every week, we kept thinking, gosh we might make £2000 or £3000, and it just spiralled and the whole community just got right behind us!

“The walk was also a celebration of everything I had been through and to come out the other side of it was a surreal experience and I can’t thank everyone who came along enough.”
Best friend, Rachel Ledingham said: “We all wanted to do this and raise awareness, but also something that all the girls, and everyone really could get involved with!
“We decided on the walk and make it a 5K as it appeals to more people, and it was amazing the amount of folk who got back to us like yes a 5K I can do that.
“The turnout was so good, because Alford is such a good community, everyone came together and you can tell that by the amount we raised.
“I think the neon helped – made it really good fun and we’re glad that our aim to raise awareness really came across.
“Jackie has done amazing through the whole thing and we all wanted to do it for her and I think she was quite overwhelmed by the whole thing and what has been achieved.”
