One of the north-east’s most popular music events was hailed a “brilliant” success as its 28th year came to a close last night.

The four-day Stonehaven Folk Festival ended on Sunday evening with a rip-roaring set by Blazin’ Fiddles, Dallahan and Top Floor Taivers in the town hall.

A huge line-up of talent from across the UK took to venues in the Mearns town for the event, which included two afternoons of music in the Market Square.

The popular aqua ceilidh at Stonehaven Outdoor Pool proved as popular as ever, whilst local musician Ross Hull and his counterpart Cameron Grant earned a place on the main stage next year following a “captivating” gig at the British Legion.

The World Paper ‘n’ Comb championships also took place at the festival with a Sound of Music theme – and was won by a group of three women dressed as nuns.

Organiser Charlie West said: “It has been a very good year in spite of the drizzle. Highlights for me included the marquee in the square which was full every day. The workshops were very well attended and effective.

“The Paper ‘n’ Comb competition was – as ever – very, very popular. The theme was the Sound of Music so there were many nuns and far too many lederhosen.”

He added it was the “little moments” which made the event for him – such as when a 10-year-old girl took to the Market Square stage yesterday when one band was delayed.

Mr West said: “She got a guitar and she was so funny and so sweet. It is the little things like that that stick out. It has all been brilliant, a great weekend.”
