Man appears in court charged with murder of Cuminestown waiter

A man has appeared in court accused of murdering a north-east waiter.

Anthony McGladrigan was found seriously injured in a property just outside Cuminestown on Wednesday.

Paramedics took him to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, but the 51-year-old could not be saved.

Yesterday, 20-year-old Liam Hay appeared in private at Peterhead Sheriff Court charged with murder.

Hay, of Aberdeen, is also accused of carrying an offensive weapon and acting in a threatening or abusive manner.

He made no plea or declaration during the brief hearing and was remanded in custody. The case was continued for further examination, and will call again next week.

Mr McGladrigan was a waiter at Chop Bar and Grill within the Sandman Hotel in Aberdeen.

Yesterday, his boss Mitch Gaglardi said he was “hugely well-liked” and “always smiling”.

His colleagues are being offered support as they come to terms with the tragedy, he added.

“We are incredibly saddened to hear of the passing of Anthony,” Mr Gaglardi said. “He was an amazing and invaluable team member who had been part of the Chop Bar and Grill journey from the beginning.

“Anthony was a hugely well-liked guy, always smiling and fantastic with guests as well as a brilliant colleague. He is going to be such a huge miss to everyone here.

“We would like to send our most sincere condolences to his loved ones and will be offering support to the rest of the team wherever it is needed.”

Earlier this week, his family said they were “devastated” at his death and described him as a “loved, brave and amazing son, husband, father, brother and exceptional friend.”

Emergency services were called to a property in Greeness, Cuminestown, at about 5am on Wednesday.

Police cordoned off the scene and forensics specialists in white suits could be seen leaving the property with items in bags.

Officers described it as an “isolated incident”.
