North-east driver caught at 110mph said he was speeding because his wife had a migraine

An Aberdeenshire man has been banned from the roads and fined after reaching speeds of 110mph because his wife had a migraine.

James Buchan was travelling on the A90 Ellon Road at Tipperty on September 7 when he sparked the attention of police travelling in an unmarked car.

After driving at 98mph, Buchan had to “brake harshly” to avoid a collision with a white Ford Fiesta which had moved into the outside lane to allow cars to join  the road at the Newburgh junction.

Fiscal depute Alan Townsend told Aberdeen Sheriff Court the 47-year-old subsequently began to “tailgate” the car until it moved into the other lane and then “accelerated to 110 mph”.

Defence agent Ian Woodward-Nutt said his client committed the offence because his wife began suffering from a migraine and he was now “very concerned” for his job.

He added: “He had been out shopping with his wife when they left Aberdeen and his wife started to take a migraine.

“When she has a severe attack, it requires her to be bedbound for days. It was against this background he committed the offence.

“He also felt he was being followed by another vehicle closely. This does not excuse the speed, but that did influence him.”

Sheriff Grant Hutchison imposed an 18-month disqualification from driving and ordered Buchan, of Corn Road, Inverallochy, to pay a £400 fine.
