A disgruntled hotel guest has been fined after making “monkey noises” at a staff member who told him to quieten down.
Thomas Campbell was told to turn down the music when he visited the Travelodge on Bridge Street, Aberdeen, on November 22 last year.
But he took umbrage to the request and began swearing and acting aggressively.
At one point he said: “I am Scottish and unemployed.”
This was taken by the hotel worker to be a racially-motivated comment.
Campbell and his friends were ordered to leave the hotel, and he made further offensive comments, including telling a man to “eat a banana”.
The 29-year-old, who is now a housing contractor, admitted acting in a racially aggravated manner at Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday and said he was “really sorry” for his actions.
But Sheriff Ian Duguid QC said: “I’m sure you’re sorry about this now but this is something the law regards with some seriousness.”
