A shoplifter has been jailed after stealing more than £200 of handbags.

Lee Paterson, 29, appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court in connection with the incident at TK Maxx in Union Square.

Paterson, whose address was given as Girdleness Road, Aberdeen, pled guilty to shoplifting.

Sheriff Andrew Miller handed Paterson a three-month jail term.

Fiscal depute Anne MacDonald said: “The quantity of goods stolen, two handbags, had a total value of £214.99 and the items were recovered as the accused was attempting to leave the premises with the items.”

The offence happened on September 14 2018.

Defence agent Michael Burnett said: “If I was to take a very, very rose-tinted view of his record, I can’t actually see any other offences of shoplifting.

“But pretty much every other offence is there so it’s not something I’ll dwell on.”

He added drugs were the cause of his client’s offending but said a sentence he is currently serving for a separate matter was helping to get him off the substances.

Mr Burnett said: “He’s glad of the respite.”

He asked the sheriff to give Paterson a custodial sentence but to make it concurrent to his current sentence.
