A man has admitted snatching £100 at a cash machine and running off.

“Opportunistic” Ryan Gray, 19, saw a woman withdrawing money from the ATM at Asda, Riverview Drive, in Dyce.

But before the woman could take her cash from the machine, Gray grabbed it and ran off.

The offence was caught on CCTV and police were called.

Fiscal depute Lynzi Souter said: “As the money was being dispensed, the member of the public went to take hold of the money but prior to being able to do so, the accused grabbed the money and ran off.”

Yesterday at Aberdeen Sheriff Court Gray pled guilty to stealing £100 as well as breaching bail conditions.

He had also previously pled guilty to five separate charges of shoplifting, taking a total of seven bottles of vodka, two of rum and five tins of chocolates.

Defence agent Liam McAllister said the ATM incident was a “clear escalation” in his client’s offending.

He added: “It was opportunistic. He had attended to check his own balance to see if his benefits had been paid.”

Gray’s benefits had not been paid and he decided to grab the £100 in a “state of desperation”.

Sheriff Ian Wallace deferred sentence on Gray, of Fifehill Park, Dyce, until next month.
