A man who crashed into a parked car at Peterhead harbour and drove away instead of reporting the damage has been fined.
Lewis McRobb, 20, appeared at Peterhead Sheriff Court on Friday where he admitted to the offence at a justice of the peace hearing.
Fiscal depute Kirsty Martin told the court that the owner of the vehicle hit by McRobb was oblivious to the damage until the following day.
The victim had been parked on Harbour Street, Peterhead, and it was not until daylight that he noticed the dents and scrapes on the passenger side of his car.
CCTV footage from Peterhead Port Authority showed McRobb driving his blue Ford Focus away from the scene shortly after the collision, around 10pm on May 8 last year.
Video evidence caught the car crash driver
“CCTV inquiries showed that the accused and three males got out of the vehicle, looked at his vehicle,” Ms Martin explained.
“The accused’s vehicle then stopped on Broad Street and the accused and three other males got out of the vehicle, examined it, and then changed one of the tyres.”
Police would later collar McRobb within his car, which was still damaged, around 3.30am on June 16 2024.
The unemployed former chef reportedly told officers: “I did not realise that I had struck another vehicle.”
An excess of £300 was paid by the owner of the other car, a Kia Sportage, to his insurer, the prosecutor added.
McRobb’s defence solicitor, Stuart Flowerdew, offered an explanation to the court about the circumstances surrounding the crash.
“The area where the collision took place, as you have just heard from my friend, is not lit,” Mr Flowerdew explained.
“He attempted to park alongside this vehicle. They had heard a noise, and when they went to investigate, it was too dark to see anything.”
The lawyer added that his client “clearly should have” then reported the incident when he drove onto Broad Street and saw the damage to his car under streetlights.
McRobb, of Beltie View in Alford, was ordered to pay a fine of £235, at the rate of £10 every fortnight.
Five points were placed on his driving licence.
