Controversial Mintlaw turbine rejected by councillors

Controversial proposals for a 260ft wind turbine near a north-east village were blocked by councillors yesterday.

The scheme at Nether Hythie Farm near Mintlaw drew a host of objections from local residents and the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

First tabled in 2013 by Lonmay firm Oosterhof and Co, Buchan councillors rejected the scheme three years ago and last month deferred the application to allow for a site visit.

Despite concerns from locals about the noise, visual and environmental impact caused by the turbine, as well as the effect on wildlife, council planners recommended the scheme for approval.

The MoD had also raised an objection over concerns the new turbine would disrupt operations at the RAF Buchan radar station.

But yesterday a majority of members of the Buchan area committee voted against granting planning permission.

Central Buchan SNP councillor Lenny Pirie said: “While I understand farmers need to diversify, I believe each turbine should be measured on it’s own merits. And I believe we need to support our local communities.”

Conservative ward colleague Edie Chapman pushed to approve the application on the grounds the developer had “covered every angle in this application and the planners have recommended it”.

Her move to grant planning permission did not get enough support however.
