First Minister Nicola Sturgeon will head to the Highlands this week to deliver a lecture in memory of the late Charles Kennedy.

The Charles Kennedy Memorial Lecture has been organised by the Lochaber Chamber of Commerce and will be hosted at Lochaber High School on Friday at 5.30pm.

It is the second time a lecture will be held in memory of the former Liberal Democrat leader and forms part of the Lochaber Ideas Week, presented each year by the chamber.

The widely admired politician died in June last year at the age of 55 after suffering a haemorrhage.

Last year’s inaugural talk was given by former deputy first minister Jim Wallace, and focused on how Mr Kennedy’s Highland heritage shaped his politics and his life.

This year, Nicola Sturgeon will be talking about how to improve transport links in the Highlands and develop and retain a young workforce in the region.

Chris O’Brien, destination manager for the Lochaber Chamber of Commerce, said: “Everyone in the area is honoured and grateful about what Charles Kennedy did for the area and the first minister will honour that memory as well. The great thing about Charles was how hard he fought for the people of the Lochaber area.”

Mr O’Brien also said that the week had been a “success” so far and there will be many more highlights.

Among those was the Dragons’ Glen competition which took place last night (Tue) and involved aspiring and local businesses having the chance to compete for a £7,500 prize.

The point of the event is to stimulate fresh initiatives and ventures, create new connections and points of collaboration designed to enhance the local area.

Scottish cyclist David Millar also gave a talk about his life and experiences on Monday evening.

The week-long event celebrates business, education and community through a gathering of talks, workshops, competitions, discussion and networking opportunities.
