An 11-year-old Ross County fan played a huge role in raising more than £16,000 for a sponsored walk to benefit the Highland branch of a cancer charity.

Alistair Urquhart was one of the top fundraisers in the 2016 Staggies Walk for Maggies sponsored walk by raising a whopping £650.

Alistair, who attends Dingwall Primary School, enjoyed lunch with the team’s manager Jim McIntyre and his first team squad yesterday as part of his prize.

He also went on a behind-the-scenes tour of the Global Energy Stadium and was presented with a pair of signed gloves from goalkeeper Scott Fox.

More than £16,000 was raised by participants in the five-mile walk last year.

And this year’s event will take place on October 21, on the day that Ross County welcome Hamilton Academical to Dingwall in the league.

All participants will receive a free match day ticket to the game.

Jim McIntyre said: “I think it’s a fantastic achievement for an 11-year-old boy to raise £650 for Maggie’s. I took my players to Maggie’s Highlands in Inverness last season and we were blown away by the amazing work they do there to help people living with cancer and their families.”

Mr McIntyre added that there were 170 participants last year but the aim is to “smash through the 300 barrier” and “at least double” last year’s fundraising amount.

Winger Michael Gardyne said that Alistair told the players yesterday that he will be trying to beat the amount he raised last year, and will challenge his pals to do the same.

Maggie’s offers free practical and emotional support for all people living with cancer, and their family and friends.
