Motorists could face chaos on busy A82 with roadworks and major cycling event

A week of chaos could hit motorists using the A82 through Lochaber today as a series of roadworks and a major cycling event combine to cause potential problems.

Today, single lane traffic management begins at the new M&S development on North Road outside Fort William.

A convoy system will take vehicles through the roadworks beginning at 8pm and continuing until 6am on Tuesday morning.

Traffic will also be reduced to a single lane on the Ballachulish bridge for essential maintenance on the structure.

The work will last for seven weeks and the bridge will be closed for four nights during this time with motorists being diverted via Kinlochleven. This road is unsuitable for HGVs which means they will face a four-hour diversion via Spean Bridge, Laggan and Perth.

Tomorrow, roadside interviews will be carried out by Transport Scotland at Innis Na Birlinn, north of the junction to the Corran Ferry.

And on Friday, hundreds of cyclists will be pedalling up to Fort William during the 2017 Ride Across Britain event. On Saturday, the competitors will be continuing on the A82 towards Inverness.

On Sunday, another wide load will be leaving the Glensanda depot in Barcaldine and travelling from Ballachulish on the A82 towards Spean Bridge.

Stewart MacLean of the A82 Partnership said: “During this time, there will also be the usual southbound traffic tailbacks at Nevis Bridge in Fort William.”
